Liwanag Sa Dilim Ver 1 by Rivermaya Rivermaya - Liwanag Sa Dilim ver 1 guitar tab Song Name - Liwanag Sa Dilim Artist Name - Rivermaya Released as a single in 2004 Tabber Name - Mark Ryan Tripole E-Mail - [email protected] [email protected] Hey, here's a tab for one of my favourite songs. This song is old, I know, but it kicks major ass. I am absolutely sure that my tab is not 100% correct but its close to being that. I only decided to make the tab now because I needed time to clarify some stuff about the song. This is purely ear transcribed and so I am not sure if some parts will sound right for you. A song with a good melody and a powerful message, coupled with Mike's face melting solo, Japs contribution with bass, Mark on drums and Rico breathing life into the song, this song is worth listening to over and over again. I may be raised in another country and stuff, but I respect the "Sariling Atin". Support OPM music, because the bands in the Philippines kick major ass (well, not all of them, but most of them do). I recently saw these guys perform here in my place (in the Phil) and seriously, I was astounded by the sheer talent and enthusiasm. Keep supporting thePhilippine music scene and enjoy the tab I made. For any of you're comments, hate mail and death threats, please e-mail me at the address above. This is dedicated to everyone in SPC Ormoc City, specifically to my cousin, Jomel Carlo, and a few other people, like his classmates and friends. I may not know them but a friend of my cuz is a friend of mine. DISCLAIMER - If you plan to post this up by copying it into your hard drive and posting it up on other public sources, mail me. I'll give it as long as I recieve the full credit. This document must not be changed in any way. Full credit to Mark Ryan only because this document is my work, and is owned by me. It is intended for you to learn. This song uses a few advanced techniques like tapping, bending and vibratos. So if you are a beginner, here's a crash course of definitions for these terms. TAPPING - this is the act of using you're picking fingers (any one of them) to 'tap' notes on the fretboard that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to reach with the fretting hand. BENDING - this is just simply bending a string while the fretted note is played. Once you play the note, just bring the string up to produce a bending effect and increase the pitch. VIBRATO - vibrato is an effect that is done on fretted notes to make them sound wavy. This is done by slightly bending the string up and down so that the note sounds wavy. PINCH HARMONICS - This was in the live version of the song (the one that I saw with my own eyes). It can be done by picking steeply in a way that as the note sounds, the string on which the note was played comes in contact with the flesh of you're thumb. This gives a loud screaming effect that would add wonderfully to the song. SWEEP PICKING - Though this is only minor, it'll help in the solo. I can't explain it. Just look it up on the Internet. Its a lead guitarists dream to master this. NOTE: Please use 2 guitars for this song (seriously, trust me). I'm not in a band so I found out both guitars myself and checked the whole thing by recording it into my PC and using Sound Recorder to merge them together. Play Guitar 1 and Guitar 2 over each other. Guitar 1 will be the tabs for whoever is you're lead guitarist, while guitar 2 is rhythm. There's a lot of dubbing done in "Liwanag Sa Dilim". Akala ko nga na iisa lang ung gitara the first time I heard it. LEGEND Here's the legend for various symbols I will be using in the tab: / - Slide Note (/ = up; = down) ^ - Bend Note PM - Palm Mute ~ - Vibrato PH - Pinch Harmonic X - Dead String T - Please Tap Here '' - Let Note(s) Ring p - Pull Off h - Hammer On b - Bend Note Tuning - Standard (EADGBe) NOTES: Please take time to learn the song. It isn't easy to learn overnight, except if you're a good player who spends loads of time playing the guitar (I do. I LOVE MY STRAT!!). The solo is purely my version and I think it almost sounds correct. Note 'almost'. I AM NOT GIVING THE PROGRESSIONS, SO LISTEN TO THE SONG FOR THE PROGRESSIONS. So that you know. INTRO (Guitar 1 should preferable be an acoustic, but its ok.) Guitar 1 e|------------------------------------| B|------------------------------------| G|------------------------------------| D|---3-----3-3-5-6---6-6-5-3---3------| A|---------------------------6--------| E|------------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|-----6-6---------6-6-----------6-6--| B|-----6-6---------6-6-----------6-6--| G|-----3-3---------3-3-----------3-3--| D|------------------------------------| A|------------------------------------| E|------------------------------------| Guitar 1 e|-------------------------------| B|-------------------------------| G|-------------------------------| D|---3-3-5-6---6-6-5-3---3-------| A|---------------------6---------| E|-------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|-----------6-6-----------6-6---| B|-----------6-6-----------6-6---| G|-----------3-3-----------3-3---| D|-------------------------------| A|-------------------------------| E|-------------------------------| Guitar 1 e|--------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------| G|--------------------------------------------| D|---3-3-5-6---6-6-5-3---3-----3-3-5-6-6-6-6--| A|---------------------6----------------------| E|--------------------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|-----------6-6-----------6-6-------6-6-6-6--| B|-----------6-6-----------6-6-------6-6-6-6--| G|-----------3-3-----------3-3-------3-3-3-3--| D|--------------------------------------------| A|--------------------------------------------| E|--------------------------------------------| The distortion kicks in here. Please have no effects while playing this. It is preferred if you have overdrive pedals so you can switch immediately from clean to overdrive. This sequence seems to work and my friends say it sounds fine. Just listen to the song for the progression. Guitar 1 e|--------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------| G|---7/8-7-----7/8-7-----7/8-7----------------| D|----------8---------6---------8---3--5--6---| A|---5/6-5--8--5/6-5--6--5/6-5--8---3--5--6---| E|----------6---------4---------6---1--3--4---| Guitar 2 e|--------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------| G|--------------------------------------------| D|-----8-8--8----8-8--6----8-8--8---3--5--6---| A|-----6-5--8----6-5--6----6-5--8---3--5--6---| E|----------6---------4---------6---1--3--4---| Guitar 1 . . . . PM e|------------------------------------| B|------------------------------------| G|---7/8-7-----7/8-7------------------| D|----------8---------6--5-5-5-5--6--| A|---5/6-5--8--5/6-5--6--5-5-5-5--6--| E|----------6---------4--3-3-3-3--4--| Guitar 2 . . . . PM e|------------------------------------| B|------------------------------------| G|------------------------------------| D|-----8-8--8----8-8--6--5-5-5-5--6--| A|-----6-5--8----6-5--6--5-5-5-5--6--| E|----------6---------4--3-3-3-3--4--| VERSE 1 Well, here we are. Basically the verse is played the same as the Intro. But not fully like the Intro. How its played is for you to find out, so get cracking. A hint is that the chord that guitar 2 plays in the intro is played continuously instead of stacatto style like in the intro. No seriously, its really easy to figure out. When he gets to the refrain part, before the chorus, it becomes a little different. Guitar 1 e|----------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1: B|-----86-------86---1--------86-------------| Give it a little sweep going down while G|---7---------7---------3----7-----------------| playing the 7th fret. This is obvious in the D|------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| song as the 7th fret on the G string (hehe) A|------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| gets silenced. Good effect too. E|------------------------------------4-4-4-4---| Guitar 2 e|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2: B|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6------------| Play this chord throughout. Don't play it G|---3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3------------| stacatto style like in the intro. Let the D|------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| chord ring and listen to the song for the A|------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| progression. E|------------------------------------4-4-4-4---| CHORUS Heres the chorus. Just refer to the song for the progression respectively. Not much difference between whats played in the intro and the chorus, except for a few minor adjustments. Follow accordingly for progression. Guitar 1 (play twice) e|--------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------| G|---7/8-7-----7/8-7-----7/8-7----------------| D|----------8---------6---------8---3--5--6---| A|---5/6-5--8--5/6-5--6--5/6-5--8---3--5--6---| E|----------6---------4---------6---1--3--4---| Guitar 2 (play twice) e|--------------------------------------------| B|--------------------------------------------| G|--------------------------------------------| D|-----8-8--8----8-8--6----8-8--8---3--5--6---| A|-----6-5--8----6-5--6----6-5--8---3--5--6---| E|----------6---------4---------6---1--3--4---| Theres a change after he says "Ikaw ang liwanag sa dilim". Its easy to notice that you don't have to play the D#5ths and that you have to go directly to playing the A#5. Heres the tab. Guitar 1 (PH) e|---------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|---------------------------------------------| The final bend on the 10th fret can be made G|------7/8-7-----7/8-7------------------------| to sound cool by adding a pinch harmonic D|---8---------6---------8---------------------| before the bend. Michael did this when I saw A|---8--5/6-5--6--5/6-5--8--/8-10-10b11--------| him live and it sounded wicked. E|---6---------4---------6---------------------| Guitar 2 e|---------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|---------------------------------------------| Always play the progressions along with guitar G|---------------------------------------------| 1 or otherwise you'll end up with an awkward D|---8----8-8--6----8-8--8---3--5--6-6-6-6-6---| sounding song. Also to the final G#5, put in A|---8----6-5--6----6-5--8---3--5--6-6-6-6-6---| some muting for effects. E|---6---------4---------6---1--3--4-4-4-4-4---| VERSE 2 Some say theres no guitar in the 2nd Verse, but there is. Only its played quietly. The second refrain yet again is different. The frets played in the second refrain aren't the same as refrain 1, so here's the tab for whats played in the second refrain. Guitar 1 e|---------------------8--6---------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1: B|-----86-------86---8--6------86------------| Give it a little sweep going down while G|---7---------7----------------7----------------| playing the 7th fret. This is obvious in the D|-------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| song as the 7th fret on the G string (hehe) A|-------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| gets silenced. E|-------------------------------------4-4-4-4---| Guitar 2 e|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6-------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2: B|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6-------------| Play this chord throughout. Don't play it G|---3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3--3-------------| stacatto style like in the intro. This D|-------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| time play the chord quietly as it is almost A|-------------------------------------6-6-6-6---| inaudible in the song, but can be heard closely. E|-------------------------------------4-4-4-4---| CHORUS Welcome, yet again to the chorus section. The progression of the chorus will be the same as before. But just to make sure, here's the tab again. Guitar 1 (play twice) e|--------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|--------------------------------------------| I would advise you to leave the final G#5 to G|---7/8-7-----7/8-7-----7/8-7----------------| guitar 2, so that you can prepare for the solo D|----------8---------6---------8---3--5--6---| beforehand. Doing this can give you ample time A|---5/6-5--8--5/6-5--6--5/6-5--8---3--5--6---| to work your way through to the solo. Good luck. E|----------6---------4---------6---1--3--4---| Guitar 2 (play twice) e|--------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|--------------------------------------------| The balance of the upcoming solo rests in your G|--------------------------------------------| hands now. So go for the gold and keep focused D|-----8-8--8----8-8--6----8-8--8---3--5--6---| on the riff. A|-----6-5--8----6-5--6----6-5--8---3--5--6---| E|----------6---------4---------6---1--3--4---| SOLO Welcome to Michael's world. This solo is not that hard to do, provided you are able to sweep pick at least a bit, are are able to tap notes. Not to mention quick fingers. "How did he learn this solo?" you might ask. Well, here are the steps I took to learn the solo: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. You must have the song in your PC. If it is in mp3 format, find a way to convert it into the wave format. 2. Once it is converted, open up Windows Sound Recorder and open the song through there. 3. Now, you're objective is to cut the parts before and after the solo, so that you are left with only the solo alone. 4. Open the edited version in Windows Media Player. Listen to it closely to get the solo (this method saves time, trust me). 5. If you still can't get it, open the edited version in Sound Recorder again and decrease the speed. Take note, that decreasing the speed will bring the whole file an octave lower. Follow accordingly to clear the solo. I found out the tapping part using this, as well as utilising what I saw Michael do live. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There, just a little something to help you if you want to try out the solo for yourself if you feel that my version is odd. I am not sure whether the tapping part is 100% correct, but it is one that sounds almost close to it. Here's the tab for this face melting solo: Guitar 1 e|---11p10----13p10----11p10----13p10----15p10----------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|---------11-------11-------11-------11--------11------| Its good if you can sweep up so G|-------------------------------------------------12---| that playing the last part of the D|------------------------------------------------------| first leg will be easier. A|------------------------------------------------------| E|------------------------------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|------------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|------------------------------------------------------| Keep playing this A#5 for the first G|------------------------------------------------------| leg of the solo. Just listen to the D|---8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--| song for the progression of the A#5. A|---8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--| Dont play it like in the tab, coz it E|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--| just shows where the power chord ends. Guitar 1 e|------------10-11p10----13p10----11p10----13p10-------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|---------11----------11-------11-------11-------11----| It helps if you sweep down after the G|---10h12----------------------------------------------| hammer-on in the first part so that D|------------------------------------------------------| its played quick and smooth. A|------------------------------------------------------| E|------------------------------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|------------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|------------------------------------------------------| Keep playing this G#5 for the second G|------------------------------------------------------| leg of the solo. Just listen to the D|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--| song for the progression of the G#5. A|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--| E|---4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--| Guitar 1 e|-------------------------------------| B|-------------------------------------| G|---10/12---7/10----------------------| D|-----------------10/12---------------| A|------------------------8/10---------| E|------------------------------8/10''-| Guitar 2 e|-------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|-------------------------------------| Keep playing this A#5 for the third G|-------------------------------------| leg of the solo. Just listen to the D|---8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8---| song for the progression of the A#5. A|---8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8--8---| Dont play it like in the tab, coz it E|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6---| just shows where the power chord ends. Guitar 1 e|-----------------------------| B|---86-6--X--86-6--X--86---| G|---X-X-X--X--X-X-X--X--X-X---| D|---53-3--X--53-3--X--53---| A|-----------------------------| E|-----------------------------| Guitar 2 e|-----------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|-----------------------------| Just listen to the song for the progression G|-----------------------------| of the G#5. Don't play it the number of times D|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6-| shown. It's just to show you where it starts A|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6-| and where it ends. E|---4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4-| Guitar 1 e|---11p10----13p10----11p10----13p10----15p10----------| B|---------11-------11-------11-------11--------11------| G|-------------------------------------------------12---| D|------------------------------------------------------| A|------------------------------------------------------| E|------------------------------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|------------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|------------------------------------------------------| Keep playing this A#5 for the fifth G|------------------------------------------------------| leg of the solo. Guitar 1 e|------------10-11p10-------13p10----11p10----13p10-------| B|---------11----------11h13-------11-------11-------11----| G|---10h12-------------------------------------------------| D|---------------------------------------------------------| A|---------------------------------------------------------| E|---------------------------------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|---------------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|---------------------------------------------------------| Keep playing this G#5 for the sixth G|---------------------------------------------------------| leg of the solo. Just listen to the D|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--| song for the progression of the G#5. A|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--| E|---4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--| Coming up next is the tapping part. I used the Sound Recorder method to find this out as well as using my memory of how he did it when I saw him live. I am not sure if it is 100% correct, but it is close to being so. Likewise, just try it out. Guitar 1 T T e|----3/6---10----4/8---11----| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|----------------------------| Play each sequence 8 times. Meaning that you play G|----------------------------| the 3s6T10 8 times and the 4s8T11 8 times. Its D|----------------------------| really easy. Just try to get the timing of the taps A|----------------------------| and slides right because it could sound wrong if not E|----------------------------| observed carefully. Guitar 2 e|----------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|----------------------------| Take note that this is not the exact number of times G|----------------------------| that the G5 and G#5 are played, its just to show you D|----5-5-5-5-5----6-6-6-6----| what to play, when to play it, and when to end it. I'm A|----5-5-5-5-5----6-6-6-6----| persistent aren't I? E|----3-3-3-3-3----4-4-4-4----| Guitar 1 PH (Compulsory) e|---------------------------18p15-------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|------------------------15-------18p15----15b16-15b16r15-------------| This part's kinda fast G|---15h17p15h17p15-15h17----------------15----------------15----15''--| so it may take some time. D|---------------------------------------------------------------------| Just be proud that you A|---------------------------------------------------------------------| learned the solo. E|---------------------------------------------------------------------| Guitar 2 e|--------------------------------------------------6--6--6--6--6--6---| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|--------------------------------------------------6--6--6--6--6--6---| You know the drill. Just G|--------------------------------------------------X--X--X--X--X--X---| play the chord continuously. D|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6---8--8---8--8--8--8--8--8---| Listen for the progression. A|---6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6---6--5---8--8--8--8--8--8---| E|---4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4--4----------X--X--X--X--X--X---| After the solo, there's this small part before he sings again where something is played. I couldn't guess at it at first but when I segregated everything, it hit me. It may not sound right, but it might if you listen to the song closely. Guitar 2 plays this, take note. Its the same chord while the bass gives it its rhythm. Guitar 2 e|---6--6--6--6--6---| NOTES TO GUITAR 2 B|---6--6--6--6--6---| Just listen to the song for the G|---X--X--X--X--X---| progression of the chord. Play this D|---8--8--8--8--8---| while the Pinch on the 15th fret is A|---8--8--8--8--8---| still ringing. E|---X--X--X--X--X---| Then comes the singing part. This has to be the easiest part of the song. So congra- tulate yourself on a job well done. You're alost finished. Guitar 2 can take a rest in this part. Guitar 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (Palm Mute) e|-------------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|-------------------------------------------------------| Just listen to the song for the G|------------------------------------------8--8--8--8---| progression. Hey, you can't blame D|---8--8--8--8---10-10-10-10--6--6--6--6---8--8--8--8---| me. All I'm doing is telling you A|---8--8--8--8---10-10-10-10--6--6--6--6---6--6--6--6---| where to put your fingers. E|---6--6--6--6---8--8--8--8---4--4--4--4----------------| Guitar 1 . . (Palm Mute) e|-------------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|-------------------------------------------------------| Listen to the song for the progression. G|-------------------------------------------------------| Play the power chords lightly in this D|---5--5--5--5---6--6--6--6---5--5--5--5----6----------| part. A|---5--5--5--5---6--6--6--6---5--5--5--5----6----------| E|---3--3--3--3---4--4--4--4---3--3--3--3----4----------| ADDITIONAL TIP - This part has this feedbackish effect, so Guitar 2 can just approach his amplifier to start the feedbackish effect. It doesn't have to be exact anyway. Now, in the final leg of the song, both guitars come back in. Here's the tab: Guitar 1 e|------------------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|------------------------------------------------------------| Listen to the song for the G|---7/8-7---------------------------------------8--8--8--8---| progression. It's easy don't D|----------8--8--8--8--10-10-10-10--6--6--6--6--8--8--8--8---| worry. The end is nigh. A|---5/6-5--8--8--8--8--10-10-10-10--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6---| E|----------6--6--6--6--8--8--8--8---4--4--4--4---------------| Guitar 2 e|------------------------------------------------------------| B|------------------------------------------------------------| G|-----------------------------------------------8--8--8--8---| D|-----8-8--8--8--8--8--10-10-10-10--6--6--6--6--8--8--8--8---| A|-----6-5--8--8--8--8--10-10-10-10--6--6--6--6--6--6--6--6---| E|----------6--6--6--6--8--8--8--8---4--4--4--4---------------| Guitar 1 e|-------------------------------------------------| NOTES TO GUITAR 1 B|-------------------------------------------------| Listen to the song for the progression. G|-------------------------------------------------| You're close to the finish line. You ave successfully completed the song. Well, just keep on practicing and you'll get it. I didn't put in the lyrics because its an unnecessary waste of time. Just look for it on the net, or better yet, memorize it by listening to the song. Please rate this tab and give me some feedback about my tab so I can do better in the future. As I said, this song is awesome and it sort of lifts up my senses. I dedicate this tab (my effort, my blood, my sweat, my tears) to "that unsmiling girl". Keep smiling, cos' its odd seeing you so down and low. I also dedicate this to a couple of friends, Paolo Salvatierra (my mentor), Miguel Mendoza (the failure) and lots more. Dedicated to the students of SPC (gotta love that school. Its actually the only school I know about here), namely my cousin, Jomel Carlo (the fag. LOL) and some other new friends I never really talked to, Zandra, Cindy and Leny. In short, I dedicate this to everybody. Keep rocking coz' this bands got a lot more to come. For your comments, death threats and hate mail, please mail me at [email protected] or mastafb@yahoo. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS RATE ME AND MAIL ME. How hard could that be? It took me almost a week and a half & 3 sleepless nights just doing the tab and reading it through while listening to the song over and over. Please respect my effort. LOL. MAIL ME, PLEASE????
